with Professor Alain George

In 715, after a decade of work, a new Umayyad monument was revealed to the world: the Great Mosque of Damascus. Its vast architectural spaces clad with mosaic landscapes, marble, and other precious materials were immediately perceived as a wonder to behold. In this lecture, we will explore the aesthetic values that underscored the conception and reception of this astounding programme.

Professor Alain George is the I.M.Pei Professor of Islamic Art at the University of Oxford.  He has researched and publishes widely across the field and MIA is delighted to welcome him to deliver this lecture.
