Qatar Contemporary: Art and Photography

November 19 – December 10 2018

Curated by Dr. Bahaa Abudaya, Dr. Giles Hudson and Sheikha Maryam Al-Thani

The exhibition showcases the creativity of Qatar’s artists and photographers as they respond to the challenges of reconciling tradition and innovation, in a period of great change and possibility.

Organized in two parts, the first entitled States of Transformation, presents over 100 works of contemporary art from Qatar. The artworks by those in the Doha Fire Station Artists in Residence programme and other members of the local artistic community numbering up to thirteen different nationalities explore the concept of continuity and change within Qatar’s culture today.

The second part, Building a Vision: Photography from Qatar, provides a window on the country and the state of development of its contemporary photographic scene. Works by the multicultural residents of Qatar are represented, as well as images by participants in Qatar Museums’ annual photographic exchange programme. This section also includes treasures from Qatar Museums’ historic collections, many of which have never been seen outside Qatar before.

This exhibition is the highlight of the 2018 Qatar-Russia Year of Culture. Launched in 2011 by Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Museums’ cultural exchange programme aims to promote a deeper understanding between nations through art, as well as to strengthen links for ongoing collaboration in the future.
