Lecture Series – A Survey of Islamic Art & Architecture

MIA is delighted to present a short series of lectures in collaboration with the MSc. Program in Islamic Art, Architecture & Urbanism at the College of Islamic Studies (CIS)/HBKU launched in September 2018. 

These lectures will give an excellent and detailed introduction to over 1400 years of Islamic architecture, and art, focusing on different dynastic periods each week and will discuss the formation and then crystallization of an Islamic architectural style, the architectural maturity and flourishing of rival dynasties, and finally the diversity of architecture in the modern period across the globe.

The lectures will be delivered by Dr Tarek Swelim, Associate Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at CIS/HBKU, who has published widely on the topic and has previously lectured at MIA on the Ibn Tulun Mosque.

 

All lectures will take place at 5:00 pm and will be delivered in English.  The lecture titles are:

Monday 1 October - Islamic Art and Architecture during the Umayyad period

Monday 22 October – Islamic Art and Architecture during the Abbasid period

Monday 29 October - Islamic Art and Architecture during the Mamluk and Ilkhanid periods

Monday 5 November - Islamic Art and Architecture during the Ottoman and Safavid periods

Monday 12 November - Islamic Art and Architecture during the Modern period
