National Museum of Qatar

Ahead of the National Museum of Qatar’s (NMoQ) opening in March, the museum’s Education Team announced plans for comprehensive education programming designed to enable teachers in Qatar to involve the new institution in their class curriculum.

Tea with Nefertiti: The Making of the Artwork by the Artist, the Museum and the Public brings together artworks spanning millennia and across continents, to present new perspectives on art. In line with Mathaf’s mandate, this book stems from an ever-pressing need to explore our perceptions and assumptions of identity. As art redefines our individual and collective sense of self, this book also seeks to provide a context for these relevant explorations in the Arab world and beyond.

Al Zubarah Archaeological Site in Qatar was inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013. Its cultural landscape is an outstanding example of the socio-economic transformation of the land, serving to shed light on the urban trading and pearldiving traditions that sustained the major coastal towns of the region from the early Islamic period to the 20th Century. This book explains the characteristics that make Al Zubarah unique, as well as efforts in preservation, research, and community engagement.

Recent Works by Mohamed Zakariya

No other American artist in recent memory has drawn unto himself so large and varied a following from so wide a range of places as Mohamed Zakariya, whose life’s devotion has been the art of calligraphy. As a master, he is the first artist to spread in a broad way the news of the great Ottoman calligraphers who made their art into a celebration of beauty as well as devotion. For the last quarter century, Zakariya has been the great proponent of a new kind of calligraphy.

Arabick Roots, an exhibition held in 2012 at the Museum of Islamic Art, focuses on two important stages in scientific history: the scientific revolution of 17th and 18th century Europe, and the Golden Age of the Muslim Civilization. It reminds us that each of our cultures is indebted to the other, and that cultural dialogue is the cornerstone of human progress. The exhibition was a collaborative effort between the Museum of Islamic Art, the Orientalist Museum Doha, The Qatar National Library, The Royal Society London, and Tate Britain.

The city of Doha has radically changed its appearance in the few decades since the economic and cultural boom began. Engaging world-class architects to construct structures that instantly assume an iconic status by the virtue of their unique and striking appearance has been the hallmark of the city’s development. Most of these exquisite buildings reference local culture, landscape and traditions, thus connecting to the recognizable toponyms and material culture of the region. The semiotics of these structures, although often related to traditional forms and features do not necessarily correspond to any break with modern architecture, but rather form a category in and of themselves. Local in inspiration, individual in design and modern in appearance, these buildings contribute to

the sense of a new national identity of the country and its citizens. Cultural facilities, perhaps more so than other buildings, have sought to communicate a sense of identity and self-perception, both through their contents and their architecture. This panel will focus on the role that museums and edifices of other cultural institutions in Qatar and elsewhere play in defining and conveying the national identity to local and global audiences.

Best Home of All

The works gathered in this book express three aspects of an open-minded Islam throughout its history: an open interest in other religions, a generous interchange of artistic designs and a deep interest in scientific enquiry from whatever source. Examples of the absorption of artistic motifs, issuing from Islamic art and vice versa from neighbouring cultures, remain endless. It reminds readers that Islamic generosity has prevailed in many other aspects of intellectual, religious and daily lives of a multitude of peoples over many centuries.

Celebrating more than a decade of success

At Qatar Museums, we are proud to celebrate more than a decade of success since our inception as a national institution designed to develop, promote and sustain the cultural sector to the highest global standards.

Since our inception in 2005, we have focused on art, creativity and heritage. Our role has also been closely aligned with the Qatar 2030 National Vision, to transfer Qatar from an oil-based economy into a thriving knowledge-based economy. During this time, under the guidance of our visionary Chairperson, H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, we have made considerable progress in realising this vision by connecting the nation’s cultural institutions and heritage sites and creating the conditions for them to thrive and flourish.

Through the hard work and enthusiasm of all who work for the organisation, we have made significant progress in realising our vision, to show how Qatar is open to the world, to enrich the lives of all those who live in and visit our country, and to inspire an indigenous culture of creativity and innovation within the Qatari community.

As we look back on our achievements since 2005, we have built an exciting creative future for Qatar.

Oral heritage in Qatar and the region is very rich and diverse. This book presents an interesting part of oral heritage: children’s rhymes. Women and parents have created these beautiful rhymes in the past, which to this day are still used to teach children good behaviour. They are also great to sing in many cultural occasions. These rhymes are part of the cultural creativity that distinguishes this region, and it’s very important to preserve for the coming generations.

Discovery of a

announced the discovery of a formerly unknown petroglyph site in the center of the Qatari Peninsula. The newly discovered site is spread across an area of around 15 hectares, making it the second largest rock carving site in the country after Al Jassasiya. This is the first time that a site of this kind is discovered away from Qatar’s coasts, thus completely transforming the current archeological map of the country.

The new site contains petroglyphs that are commonly known as “rosette” and consist of a central cupmark circularly surrounded by several other cupmarks. In the Gulf region this type of rock carving is unique to Qatar and is believed to have been used for a children’s game.

Since last week, QM’s Department of Archaeology has been performing extensive survey activities to document the site in detail. It is expected that the new discovery will provide more accurate clues about the function and dating of the carvings, as well as their relationship with the other sites found around Qatar.

Commenting on the discovery, Mr. Faisal Al Naimi, Director of the Department of Archaeology stated: “The newly discovered site is another addition to Qatar’s diverse archeological locations and a testament to the impact that our ancestors have had on the land. We are still conducting site surveys and tests but we believe that the well found close to the site gives us an idea about the Qatari community that lived here at a certain point in history. We also noticed that the number of “rosette” carvings here far exceeds the ones found in Al Jassasiya, making this site an important historical witness.”

QM’s Department of Archaeology was alerted about the site’s location after a call from Mr. Ali Mutar Al-Dosari, whose family has lived in the area for generations. Since his childhood, Mr. Al-Dosari had noticed the carvings near the well but only realized their potential significance after hearing about QM’s work in archeology and heritage conservation.

“Ever since I can remember, I have always been intrigued by these carvings and their story,” said Mr. Al-Dosari. “When I heard about Qatar Museum’s work in the field of archeology, I knew that I must contact them immediately. They arrived on the same day and, after conducting initial testing, informed us that the sites have an important historical significance. I am very pleased and proud to have contributed to preserving our identity and past.”

Since its inception, QM has been putting local communities, young and old, in touch with their past, reminding them of the skills, wisdom and struggles of their ancestors.

How has art education changed since the establishment of the first art academies some centuries back? Has it changed enough so that it follows current trends and prepares students for challenges of today›s art industry, or is academic training in some ways out
of touch with the art world? What new fields of instruction,
courses or pedagogical approaches need to be integrated into existing academic programs? Ultimately, how important is formal art education for artists, designers, and artisans-craftsmen,
as well as other art and museum professionals? These are some of the questions related to art education and the art world beyond academia that will be explored by this panel.
