A look back on many achievements of 2014

The year 2014 was a vibrant one for us! Not only did we launch our new brand and new website, we held cross-cultural activities in Brazil and at home as part of the Qatar-Brazil Year of Culture. We unveiled Richard Serra’s awe-inspiring East-West West-East in the Brouq Nature Reserve in Qatar’s North Western desert and we decorated the new Hamad International Airport with public art installations that stop global passengers in their tracks!

We hosted the UNESCO 38th Session of the Committee, chaired by our very own chair person, H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa in 2014 and offered Doha’s culture lovers our new membership programme, Culture Pass.

We also hosted international artists as well as local contemporary ones in 2014. The year started with the final weeks of Damien Hirst’s Relics exhibition, a first for the Middle East and for Qatar in particular. At QM Galleries Al Riwaq and Katara we invited you to view a retrospective of Serra’s work, and then worked with 6 Qatari artists to create their own pieces inspired by Serra for the Creation Generation Project. At Mathaf, we showcased the art of Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum and Lebanese-American Etel Adnan, in two moving exhibitions. We took our Pearls to Brazil, a fine jewelry exhibition that has previously travelled from Doha to Kobe and London.

In the fall, we welcomed Shirin Neshat’s first Middle Eastern exhibition to Mathaf, and were moved by the cultural and historical realities of her work. We celebrated Qatar’s artists in three major exhibitions across the city, Yousef Ahmad’s Story of Ingenuity at Katara, young Qatari artists alongside their Brazilian counterparts at Here There, and the private collections of Qatar and Gulf collectors at Mal Lawal. These exhibitions will continue into 2015.

We look forward to an exciting 2015 with our new Year of Culture partner Turkey and many more creative and artistic endeavors to come!
