CiMAM arrives in Doha


Today, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani welcomed leading figures from museums and institutions around the world to Doha for the annual CiMAM 2014 conference. This special event, held for the first time in the region, is running from Sunday 9th November to Tuesday 11th November at Mathaf.

CiMAM is considered the most important forum for communication, cooperation, and information exchange between museums, professionals, visual arts workers and artists within modern and contemporary art practice.

Today's keynote speech was delivered by Hito Steyerl, an artist, filmmaker and essayist currently based in Berlin, Germany. She touched upon many interesting topics; from duty free art to museums as battlefields. Her engaging keynote was sure to keep the audience interested and the discussion fruitful.

The day continued with a series of prospectives followed by a one-on-one conversation between Shirin Neshat and Abdellah Karroum, Director of Mathaf.

CIMAM is the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art, and an International Committee of ICOM. It is an international forum of professional character for the discussion of theoretical, ethical and practical issues concerning the collection and exhibition of modern and contemporary art.

The first CIMAM Annual Conference took place on July 5th 1962 in The Hague. Since then, CIMAM’s Annual Conference has become an important meeting point for contemporary art professionals and an essential resource for the collaboration between museums, visual art professionals, artists and other institutions concerned with modern and contemporary art.
