Qatar Uk 2013

The programme of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture made all this and much more happen, in around eighty events across ten cities including London and Doha. It encompassed nearly every form of creative expression: fine arts and drama, music and dance, architecture and design, fashion and film

WE REPRESENT TWO MAJOR CULTURES, THE ARAB ISLAMIC CULTURE AND THE ANGLO-SAXON CULTURE. THE EXCHANGE OF ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS BETWEEN US IS A MEANS OF ACHIEVING CO-OPERATION AND UNDERSTANDING
H.E. Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari, Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage

Damien Hirst’s seven-metre-long basking shark, pickled in formaldehyde. An architectural blueprint that re-imagines Doha’s oldest neighbourhood as an educational hub. Sophisticated abayas paired with haute couture hats in a runway show. Sketches from a 20-day journey from northern Qatar to Wales aboard a liquid natural gas tanker. Qatari actors performing a scene from Shakespeare’s Othello in Arabic on the Globe stage. Original orchestral compositions. Disabled children learning about creativity and themselves through painted outlines of their bodies.

The programme of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture made all this and much more happen, in around eighty events across ten cities including London and Doha. It encompassed nearly every form of creative expression: fine arts and drama, music and dance, architecture and design, fashion and film.

In addition to enriching the lives of the thousands who attended or participated in the events, and expanding cultural awareness in the two countries, Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture leaves behind an entirely new body of artistic work –paintings and sculpture, musical compositions and photographs, architectural plans and fashion designs, all created during this very special year. Moreover, Qatar UK 2013 laid the foundations for future collaboration among institutions and individuals, founding competitions and residencies, annual events, and inspiring completely new initiatives in Qatar and the Gulf region in such areas as arts and disability.
