Wael Shawky Exhibition opens at Mathaf

Wael Shawky: Crusades and Other Stories opens today at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art.

Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani presented the exhibition's official launch on Sunday, 15th March, where press and VIPs were invited to view the show with the artist himself.

The exhibition is curated by Mathaf's Director, Abdellah Karroum.

Wael Shawky’s first solo show at Mathaf is installed in the ground floor galleries and the atrium of the museum and includes the trilogy Cabaret Crusades (2010-2014) and the three-part series, Al Araba Al Madfuna (2012-2015).

It also premieres a new film commissioned by Mathaf, completing the three-part series, Al Araba Al Madfuna (2012 – 2015), a re-telling of the stories of Egyptian novelist Mohamed Mustagab.

In addition, the exhibition includes a selection of puppets from the Cabaret Crusades and drawings from both video trilogies.  The architecture and scenography produced for Mathaf create an original atmosphere that combines the artist’s references of history, literature and cinema, through which other stories are imagined.
