UNESCO Committee meet in Doha
The 38th session of the World Heritage Committee opened on 15th June at 7pm at the Qatar National Convention Center in Education City.
Our Chairperson, Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is the chairperson of the 38th session, and welcomed delegates to Qatar at the opening ceremony.
During the opening, Prime Minister of Qatar Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, announced that Qatar will donate $10 million to a new fund to protect World Heritage sites affected by conflict or natural disaster.
In her address, Sheikha Al Mayassa highlighted the multiple threats facing World Heritage today and called on all of the States to support Qatar’s initiative by contributing to the newly created fund.
During this session, between 15th and 25th June 2014, the Committee will consider the inscription of 36 sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and will examine the state of conservation of over 100 of the existing World Heritage properties.
